The Tactica One is not just any bottle opener. Its unique design and use of proprietary material, typically used in aerospace and military industries, sets it apart from conventional bottle openers. The design is compact, ergonomic, and highly tactile, using inherent material properties to deliver functional performance in an ultra-lightweight package. Measuring 128mm long, 40mm wide, 7mm thick, and weighing just 22g, this tool is a testament to Chijoff's innovative design approach.
Chijoff's inspiration for the Tactica One stemmed from the increasing global demand for premium beverages. He observed that the drinking experience often begins only when the user tastes the beverage, due to the use of sub-standard bottle openers. Chijoff sought to change this, allowing users to start their experience from the moment they pick up the bottle opener. The Tactica One is a response to this, a tool that matches the premium beverages it is used to open.
The design of the Tactica One posed several challenges. It is the world's first composite bottle opener, requiring a design that could withstand the torsional forces produced during the opening action. The composite material was able to create a working surface strong enough to handle the physical forces from the steel bottle top. The integration of textures in the tooling provided a greater connection with the user through tactile surfaces.
The Tactica One was developed in Melbourne, Australia, between May and December 2014. Extensive research was undertaken into areas such as existing products, manufacturing, and materials, as well as user experiences and drivers. The positive response from test subjects confirmed the success of the Tactica One, validating Chijoff's efforts to rethink the user's experience.
Chijoff's Tactica One was awarded the Platinum A' Design Award in 2015. This award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, genius, and contribute to societal wellbeing. The Tactica One, with its unique design and innovative use of materials, certainly fits this description, advancing the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology, and making the world a better place.
